A miracle dog from Woolwich has survived after suffering “some of the worst stick injuries” seen by a vet when a game of fetch went disastrously wrong.

Staffordshire bull terrier crossbreed Brandy was rushed to the vets when an 11-inch stick pierced her throat right the way down through her chest as she played in the garden.

Owner Sophia-Jayne Lye said: “I was inside when I heard my daughter Soe screaming. I rushed out and saw Brandy lying there with a huge stick pushing out of her chest.

“It was unbelievable. Luckily she was still breathing but I knew we needed to get her help urgently.”

They rushed to PDSA’s Thamesmead Pet Hospital where vets were astonished that Brandy was even still alive.

The stick had pierced her mouth, travelled through her throat and was lodged in her chest.

Brandy underwent life-saving surgery to remove the stick, which took four-and-a-half hours, but it was still touch-and-go for her.

After several days at the hospital Brandy was able to go home, but still required round-the-clock care from her owners and regular visits back to PDSA.

PDSA pet hospital leader Laura Davey said: “Brandy’s were some of the worst stick injuries I’ve ever seen.

“She was incredibly lucky, as it would’ve been fatal if the stick had hit an artery.

“She was such a wonderful patient, and her owners’ dedication ensured she recovered as quickly as possible.”

Brandy has luckily now fully recovered from her ordeal and in the running for an award.

She has reached the final of the PDSA Pet Survivor of the Year competition, which is being decided in a public vote at www.pdsa.org.uk/petsurvivor2018

Brandy is up against three cats that were all fortunate to survive accidents or attacks.

Voting is open until November 30. The winner will be announced just before Christmas and will win a luxury pet hamper and a trophy.
