Plans to turn a family property in Sutton into a new care home have been scrapped.

A planning application was submitted to the council which asked to convert the Mayfield Road home from a single family household into a care facility.

Additional work would have included knocking down a detached garage and outbuilding while developing a single storey rear extension.

But people were overwhelmingly against the proposals, as all 23 public comments from residents in the road as well as surrounding areas objected to the plans at the time of publishing.

Jane Hill, who lives in the same road as the property, said: “Mayfield Road already has four care homes – which is more than enough for a single residential road. Adding another just reduces community cohesion.

“The application to demolish the existing garage, which is one of the few remaining original garages left in the area, and replace with an extremely ugly flat-roofed extension, with no architectural merit, would damage the street scene.”

Several people were concerned with the number of care homes already in the immediate area, while others raised issues over parking and “local character”.

Mayfield Road resident Malcolm Ralston said: “The 2018 Local Plan, policy 11, reports an oversupply of care homes in the borough. There is no proven need for bed space.

“There is a clear problem with excessive numbers of parked cars in the road. Another care home would exacerbate that problem, as there is insufficient car parking provision on site.”

Mr Ralston added that he believes there would be a rise in “commercial traffic delivering to and from the home”.

But the plans submitted by the homeowner Nazim Manji were withdrawn earlier this week on Wednesday, November 14, before a decision could be made.

It’s currently unclear as to why they were scrapped.
