Southwark Council will continue to lobby for three new stations in the borough as part of the Bakerloo Tube line extension.

This comes after Transport for London announced proposals which included only two stations along Old Kent Road.

Speaking at an overview and scrutiny committee, cabinet member for growth, development and planning Cllr Johnson Situ said Southwark Council will “do everything in its power” to make sure the Bakerloo line is delivered – and push for a third station at the Bricklayers Arms.

TfL is considering extending the line from Elephant and Castle into New Cross Gate via Old Kent Road, but needs to secure funding.

“The recent consultation on the most preferred bid – the council pushed for three stations along Old Kent Road. We were disappointed to see it was only only two stations announced as the most preferred bid.

“We say we will continue to lobby hard to ensure the stations are delivered across the Old Kent Road,” he said.

Councillors were working hard with driving up awareness of the scheme, with the Back the Bakerloo campaigning garnering more than 6,000 supporters, and were pushing to get support from the Mayor of London, he said.

The council had also committed 70 per cent of community infrastructure levy (CIL) funding generated along the Old Kent Road to the Bakerloo line – a sum of between £200m to £300m.

Southwark Council calculations show 10,500 of the 20,000 new homes planned for Old Kent Road will not be built without the extension.

If central government approves plans for the extension and the funding needed is secured, construction could begin in 2023.

“[The Bakerloo line extension is] absolutely fundamental to some of the big schemes we have in those areas,” he said.

“We commit to funding it and will do everything in our power to make sure it is delivered,” he told the committee.

The council had written a “number of letters” to senior members of TfL and plan with make a joint presentation with TfL and Lewisham Council to the government on the extension.

“We will ensure we are securing as much support for the Bakerloo line as possible,” he said.
