A child has been injured after being hit by a car outside Oakfield Community Primary School in Dartford this morning.

The incident was reported just before 9am as police and ambulances were called to the scene.

According to a spokesman from the South East Coast Ambulance Service, one ambulance and two cars arrived at the scene where the child was treated for minor injuries.

The child was then transported to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham.

A spokeswoman for Kent Police said: "Police were called to Oakfield Lane, Dartford at 8.52am on Tuesday, 13 November 2018 following a report of a road traffic collision involving a car and a child.

"South East Coast Ambulance Service were called to treat the child who was reported to have suffered a cut to their face, at this stage the injury is not thought to be serious.

Officers are currently on the scene."

Kelly Grehan, a spokeswoman for the Dartford Safer Roads campaign, has said that it is "devastating that another child has been hit by a car on their way to school.

"Roads in Dartford are neglected and so far our efforts to engage KCC in looking into the problems have been ignored. We want 20mph speed limits put in place, as they are on other towns including Camden, Bristol, Croydon and Greenwich.

"We also want to see irresponsible parking penalised, with the rules enforced and a safe crossing point to be placed outside every school. This is vitally important as several schools have lost their lollipop patrols in recent year," she said.

Another campaigner and concerned local resident, Darren Povey, has said: "I joined the Dartford Safer Road Campaign after my son was hit by a car in September and hearing of yet another incident is heartbreaking and brings back so many awful feelings."

The 39 year old also said that around schools, "the safety of children should be uppermost in everyone's minds."

A petition launched by the group calling for safer roads around schools in Dartford has reached over 1,600 signatures.
