Plans for a new library and a three-screen cinema in Sidcup have taken a step forward after Bexley Council appointed a London-based architecture firm to develop the project.

The redevelopment will see the current library downsized to a modern facility and a new arthouse cinema constructed on the old Blockbuster site.

Demolition work on the site will take place next spring and the council is set to submit a planning application by next summer.

DRDH is known for its previous work on developments including the Victoria & Albert Museum in Knightsbridge and the London Metropolitan University's art gallery.

Deputy leader of the council Louie French said: "There is a lot of excitement in the town about the prospect of the new library and cinema in such a prime location.

"When the project is complete an empty building will be replaced with a fantastic new facility that will attract new people into the town and boost the local economy," said Councillor French.

Plans to move Sidcup Library have been met with controversy in the past as some people were unhappy they weren't consulted over the plans.

However, Noel Lake of the Sidcup Library Action Group explained the group now just wishes to make sure that it, along with other concerned residents, is kept in the loop about the development and that it's a "success for the people of Sidcup."

"It's a big building with a lot of space, we want a say in what the space is used for and that it reflects the needs of the community," said Mr Lake.

Councillor Peter Craske, cabinet member for places, said he is confident the new library location will be a "great success" and combined with the cinema, will prove to be a "real attraction for people of all ages."
