Kent Fire and Rescue has issued some advice on how to stay safe on fireworks night.

Fireworks night can be really exciting and as long as everyone uses a bit of common sense there is no reason for the evening not to go well.

People should bear in mind that a simple sparkler can burn up to a temperature of 2,000 degrees centigrade, so they should never be given to children under the age of five.

The safest way to enjoy the evening is to attend a professionally organised event as there are more precautions put in place if god forbid, something happened.

Something to bare in mind - It is illegal to set fireworks off between 11pm and 7am except in the following cases:

Bonfire Night - 5 November – until midnight

Diwali - 1am on the following day

New Year’s Eve – 1am on the following day

Chinese New Year – 1am on the following day

Kent Fire and Rescue say that in the event of an emergency you should:

STOP where you are

DROP to the ground

ROLL around to put the fire out

COOL the burn or scald under cool running water for at least 20 minutes

CALL for help, in an emergency call 999

COVER with loose cling film

And lastly - Some firework safety tips

Only buy fireworks marked with CE.

Never drink alcohol if setting off fireworks.

Keep fireworks in a closed metal box and take them out one at a time.

Always follow the instructions carefully when using them.

Light the firework at arms length with a taper and stand well back.

Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks.

Never go back to fireworks once they are lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode.

Respect your neighbours

Keep your pets indoors throughout the evening with the curtains closed.
