A man who brutally attacked and killed a bus passenger in Lewisham has been convicted for murder.

Kirk Wright, 33, Egmont Street, murdered Julian Joseph in an unprovoked attack on a bus in New Cross. Mr Joseph, 36, died in hospital.

The court heard how police and the London Ambulance service (LAS) were called at approximately 12:20 am on Tuesday, March 13 to reports of an assault abroad a Route 53 bus. The incident happened near the junction with Alpha Road.

Investigators established that Julian Joseph had been approached by Wright on the lower deck of the bus where he was assaulted, knocked to the ground and then kicked and repeatedly stamped on. This sustained attack resulted in a severe head injury.

Julian was taken to a south London hospital by London Ambulance Service where he remained in a critical condition until he died at a few days later on the afternoon of Saturday, 24 March.

A post-mortem examination held at Greenwich Mortuary on Tuesday, March 27 established the cause of death as a head injury. The initial investigation was conducted by officers from the Roads and Transport Policing Command before being passed to the Homicide and Major Crime Command.

Following CCTV footage enquiries and DNA evidence gathered at the scene, police arrested a Wright in connection with the attack on Mr Joseph on Thursday, March 15. He was charged with GBH with intent the next day but this was changed to murder after Mr Joseph died.

His claims to have known the victim and that the attack was motivated by an existing dispute were dismissed at court. He was found guilty of murder at on Thursday, October 25 at Woolwich Crown Court. He will be sentenced on Thursday, November 1.

DCI John Massey from the Homicide and Major Crime Command said: "This attack was brutal and sustained. Wright must have known his savage actions would result in very serious injury or worse as has sadly proven to be the case. I hope this conviction for murder goes someway to helping Julian's family being consoled after such a harrowing episode in their lives."
