The Mayor of London has confirmed he will help Stephen Lawrence supporters in their fight to get a statue of the murdered teenager.

Stephen Lawrence was just 18 years old when he was brutally murdered in a racially motivated attack on April 22, 1993.

A petition which has been signed by more than 61,000 people is now looking to get a statue of Stephen in Trafalgar Square.

The young man lived in Plumstead but was waiting for a bus in Eltham when five or six white youths crossed the road and began their racist attack.

Sadiq Khan has now said he will help to find an appropriate location for a statue in his honour, however it is not likely to be at the iconic London landmark.

A statue would require planning permission from Westminster City Council who are the planning authority for the square.

Trafalgar Square is also a Grade II listed monument and in addition to usual planning legislation it is subject to stricter controls with oversight from Historic England.

A spokesman for the Mayor of London said: “The horrific murder of Stephen Lawrence shocked London and the whole country. The mayor has always supported honouring Stephen’s memory and what his family has achieved, including hosting a 25th anniversary commemoration of Stephen’s life at City Hall in April.

“The mayor agrees that a statue of Stephen would be a powerful symbol for our city, where we see diversity as our greatest strength. City Hall is working with Stephen’s family to see if we can help find the most appropriate location for a statue in his honour.”
