Dartford-based Thamesmead Town football club have announced they are folding after their final ever match ended in a 3-0 win.

The club was founded in 1969 and chairman Paul Bowden-Brown said he had no other choice but to call it day.

Thamesmead, originally based in the town before a move to Dartford in 2017, has barely survived the past few seasons due to financial difficulty.

Their last ever game was a 3-0 win against Guernsey on October 6 in the Bostik South East division.

Mr Bowden-Brown said nobody had shown interest in taking over the club, which forced him to appoint a liquidator with immediate effect.

He said: “We have continued to have a lack of supporters coming through the gate to watch the team this season.

“Even though I finance the club management, the squad of players, the ground and all other required expenses, coupled with my failing health, I have had to make a very difficult decision.”

Thamesmead Town moved into their own stadium Bayliss Avenue in 2013 before financial struggles led to a five-year ground share with Dartford FC in 2017.

However, the club profited just £11 from the last two fixtures once the officials were paid.

Mr Bowden-Brown thanked everyone he has worked with during his six-year stay and a small group of "incredibly loyal" fans.

The chairman added: “Hopefully, I will be remembered not as the person that killed Thamesmead Town FC but as someone who through his financial commitment and personal effort gave the club those extra years of enjoyment that without my support the Club would have died so much earlier.”
