A dad whose family was put at risk after their home was set fire to says he want to help troubled youths become better citizens.

Mac Karlekar, 43, said it was the only way for him to “let go” of the trauma of having to flee his home.

His young family escaped the roaring fire which was started outside their front door in Borkwood Park in the early hours of September 16.

Mac described leading his partner and son, 14, to safety after frantic neighbours banged on his door as "a fear like no other".

His nine-year-old daughter was at a sleepover on the night of the attack.

One month on, Mac is raising money to help misguided youths find "true purpose and passion".

He said: "For me a good citizen gives back to the community and not just takes and looks after his own family.

"A life of crime is very short and today or tomorrow it will end miserably. I am starting this fund to help raise awareness of such issues where the change has to happen for self, family and society that we live in.

"I don’t know what impact this money will have but it is the only way I could face what happened and let go."

Mac said he wants those responsible for the arson attack to realise their mistake and to feel remorse.

So far over £500 has been raised and Mac is now looking for charities aiming to give young people opportunities in life.
