A petition has been launched to stop the Ministry of Defence selling the Woolwich Barracks.

The government has proposed the site the barracks are on will be sold off by 2028.

However, Matthew Pennycook, the Labour MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, has started a petition to stop the selling of the land due to the history in the area.

He said: "There has been an unbroken military presence in Woolwich for over three centuries.

"The imprint of the armed forces on our town can be seen everywhere, from its architecture to its street names.

"I am opposed to the Government’s plans to close the barracks and believe the case for selling it off simply doesn’t stack up."

The barracks in Woolwich was the home of the Royal Artillery from 1776 until 2007 and is still used by the military.

Mr Pennycook now wants your help to make the government think again and let them know the strength of feeling against the plans.

He has been campaigning since the announcement of the closure in 2016 and believes he can stop the barracks being disposed of.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "Our military bases are where our service personnel live, train and work, so it’s important that we have sites which suit the needs of the armed forces.

"That’s why we’re making our defence estate more modern and efficient, by closing sites we don’t need and investing in more modern accommodation.

"As well as saving money, and allowing reinvestment back into a more modern and better defence estate, the changes will provide greater long-term stability and certainty for our Armed Forces and their families.”
