Murderers, rapists and fraudsters have been jailed in south east London and north Kent this month.

News Shopper has reported on brutal murders, sexual assaults and even attacks on police officers.

These are the most significant cases last month.

Malcolm Mattin - Possession of a knife

Malcolm Mattin, 65, who lives on the High Street was found guilty of possession of a knife on Friday, September 7.

According to police, Mattin was "well known" to officers because of several complaints about his behaviour. When officers received reports he was walking in public carrying a "large kitchen knife", he was arrested "promptly."

As well as community service, Mattin was given a suspended prison sentence of three months and was ordered to pay £115 in compensation.

David Rodley- Engaging in sexual activity with a child, grooming and having "sexual communication" with a child

David Rodley, 30, a former Met Police special constable, admitted to engaging in sexual activity with a child, grooming and having "sexual communication" with a child.

His three victims were aged 14 and 15 and his offences were all between August and November 2017. Rodley, of Ashcroft Avenue in Sidcup, was sentenced to nine years in prison with an extended license period of five years at Oxford Crown Court.

He also pleaded guilty to attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual act and attempting to permit indecent images of a child to be taken, as well as perverting the course of justice, assault with intent to resist arrest, possessing a bladed article and possessing MDMA, cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin.

Anthony Rose- Illegally subletting housing association property

Anthony Rose, 45, was sentenced to 14 months in jail for illegally subletting his housing association property for more than six years. Rose obtained the one-bedroom property from the Hyde Group in December 1996.

Hyde became suspicious of subletting when staff visited the property in April 2017 and found a woman living alone at the address. Hyde’s tenancy team asked Greenwich Council's anti-fraud team to investigate and they visited the property and met with the current occupant.

Billy Joe Friend - Robbery

Billy Joe Friend was wrongly convicted of murder has now been sentence to more than seven years in prison for robbing shops.

Friend was jailed in 1996 after being found guilty of stabbing Ben O'Connor, 18, while at a party in Conway Road, Plumstead. Friend, who was just 15 at the time of the killing, appealed on the grounds the trial judge had allowed the jury to draw adverse conclusions from the fact he did not testify on his own behalf at the trial.

His conviction was quashed in 2004 after medical evidence showed Friend was suffering from ADHD, which meant he would not have been able to give evidence properly. The wrongly convicted man has since gone on to become a prolific robber who has stolen televisions from supermarkets in Sevenoaks and Swanley.

Dyjarn Belle, Kamahl Cameron and Jordashe James - Stabbing

Just after 7pm on March 10 the 23-year-old victim was stabbed six times in High Street, including one which punctured his lung.

Officers from the Trident and Area Crime Command launched an investigation and eventually traced a vehicle that had been used by those involved in the attack. This led them to Gipsy Hill where Jordashe James, 24, of Lunham Road in Crystal Palace was arrested.

Kamahl Cameron, 22, Colby Road in Gipsy Hill of was identified as the driver of the vehicle arrested ten days after the attack, during which he was found with £25,000 worth of cocaine and crack cocaine

Finally, forensic evidence linked Dyjarn Belle, 22 of Bennetts Close, Mitcham Belle to the attack and he was subsequently arrested. All three pleaded guilty to various offences when they appeared for trial at Croydon Crown Court on Monday, September 3

Lee Anthony Brown - Attempted robbery and possessing an offensive weapon

Lee Anthony Brown was jailed after pleading guilty of trying to attack shopkeeper with a knife after being told he couldn't buy alcohol.

Woolwich Crown Court heard that Brown, of no fixed address had been refused service of alcohol at the Erith Mini Market on Saturday, March 3 because it was before 7am.

After being refused service, the 35-year-old, along with an unknown man, picked up a couple cans of beer and left the store without paying. A few minutes later Brown entered the store again and opened the Perspex door to gain access to the area behind the till. He tried to attack the shopkeeper and left after a struggle, only to return with a knife.

The shopkeeper managed to overpower Brown and take the knife off him. Brown has been jailed for 10 years.

Jenny McDonagh - Fraud

Jenny McDonagh, 39, of Willrose Crescent, was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court on (September 28) after admitting fraud and the theft of £62,062 meant for victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster. She was charged with two counts of fraud by abuse of position, one count of theft by employee and one count of money laundering relating to the tragedy. She has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail.

Barry Northcott - Causing death by careless driving

Barry Northcott, 40, caused fatal and "catastrophic injuries" to Karla Roman when he turned left into the 32-year-old in Whitechapel, east London, after failing to spot her in his mirrors, Woolwich Crown Court previously heard.

Ms Roman, who was just a few minutes from home in Trundleys Road, died of her injuries in hospital after being dragged under the wheels of the coach on February 6 last year. Northcott, of Southover, was convicted of causing death by careless driving last month and was sentenced to 15 months in jail.

He was also banned from driving for five years and seven months and must re-take his driving test, the force added.

David Howard - Burglary, attempted burglary and handling stolen goods

David Howard, 53, of Keyes Road in Dartford, pleaded guilty to burglary, attempted burglary and handling stolen goods. Howard was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court to seven-and-a-half years in prison.

He burgled four homes in Dartford and attempted to steal from another between November 3 and November 9.

The first target was a house in Meadow Way, where Howard used tools to force open a back door and steal jewellery. CCTV nearby caught Howard on camera. Two days later, properties in Invicta Road and St Vincent's Avenue were broken into, and tools were used again to force open doors.

Watches, old coins and jewellery were taken in these incidents, and Howard was caught on camera once again. The last incident happened in Watling Street on November 9, when Howard smashed a window at the back of the house. Once again, Howard was caught on CCTV.
