A family from Chislehurst will be the focus of a DIY SOS Big Build programme as the team takes on their home.

Mike (39) and Chantal (37) Newcombe have three sons: Eight-year-old Luca, four-year-old Sonny and two-year-old Arlo.

When Arlo was born, he was discovered to have a rare lung disease. He is the only child in the UK to be suffering from this genetic mutation.

As a result of his illness, Arlo's lungs have to be constantly supported by a 24/7 oxygen supply. His condition has been described as "life on a knife edge".

Since he was born, his family has partially lived with him in a 5ft cubicle at Kings College Hospital's intensive care ward.

Mike and Chantal are desperate to get Arlo home, and are having specialist training so they can give him the care he needs in his own house.

In order to make sure Arlo is cared for, he needs two full-time carers by his side and huge pieces of equipment.

Mike also needs to return to work to keep up mortgage repayments on the house.

This is where the DIY SOS team comes in - to build an extension and redesign the ground floor of the house to adapt it for Arlo's needs.

The team is looking for volunteer tradespeople to help out with the project from October 16 to 25.

Anyone who wants to get involved needs to attend a trades day on October 4.

Those who are interested should email diysosbromley@bbc.co.uk giving their trade, availability and phone number.
