Five brothers from Sydenham have been commemorated on a plaque to recognise their service in the armed forces during the First World War.

The Quinn brothers lived in Bell Green more than 100 years ago. After signing up for the 'Great War', they all went off to fight for their country.

Sadly, only George Quinn returned home.

Now, 100 years after the end of the war, Lewisham Council has installed a memorial at their former home - 13 Bell Green, Sydenham - which is now home to Sainsbury's.

The story of the Quinn brothers was memorialised in the programme of the Remembrance Sunday service after George's grandson, Steve, got in touch.

The plaque was unveiled on the anniversary of the fourth brother, and was attended by Quinn family members from across the country.

Cllr Kevin Bonavia said: “It is impossible for us to imagine the pain that the Quinn family suffered from losing four of their own.

"We remember with the deepest pride and gratitude all five brothers who served and let their names serve as an example to us and future generations of the huge sacrifice that the Quinn family and so many others made on our behalf.”

The maroon plaque now sits underneath the main Sainsbury's sign, just opposite the petrol station.
