A 20-year-old man from Welling has been jailed for a year after his dog attacked a woman in the street.

Frankie Gardiner, of Linton Close, was arrested after his Shar Pei-type dog left the woman with several injuries in August of last year.

The woman was bitten five times by the dog - with some bites as deep as the bone. She has undergone several operations and has been left with psychological harm as a result of the attack.

After the attack, Police say the dog's owner ran away from the scene and was "actively evading" police.

In May 2018, police tracked down Gardiner - who was with his dog, Diablo - and arrested him.

Gardiner pleaded guilty to having a dog dangerously out of control in a public place the following day.

At his sentencing at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday, August 28, Gardiner was given a year-long jail term and has been banned from owning a dog for three years.

He will also be forced to pay a total of £640 to the victim.

A destruction order has been issued to put down Diablo.

Commenting on the case, the judge said: She (the victim) was savaged by your dog and you failed to supervise your dog.

"You went to ground with your dog and your actions were irresponsible.

"You are not fit to own a dog and the public and their pets accord protection from this dog, Diablo must be destroyed.”

PC Robinson from the East Wickham Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “This was an attack on a lone woman who simply approached the dog while passing through a public street.

"The dog launched a sustained attack on the victim which has left her with scarring both physically and mentally.

"The conviction and sentence reflect appropriately on the offence.”
