The former building for British Home Stores in Bromley High Street is set to be turned into a supermarket.
Lidl confirmed that construction work has begun and it is hoped the German supermarket chain will be ready to open this year.
A spokesman told News Shopper: “The store will create up to 40 new jobs for the local economy when opened and will feature facilities including an in-store bakery, customer toilets, and a sales area of 1,106sqm.”
BHS was located on the high street before the company closed after 88 years in 2016.
Lidl's board director for expansion and development Ingo Fischer spoke earlier this year about "ambitious expansion plans in and around the M25".
He said: “As more London households choose to shop at Lidl we are committed to the continued investment in our operations and infrastructure to support our growth."
