A Lewisham councillor has said the extension of the Bakerloo line into the borough “is central to unlocking the future economic growth in Lewisham.”

This comes as Lewisham Council teams up with Southwark Council to launch a campaign for London-wide support of the extension.

Transport for London is considering extending the Tube line from Elephant and Castle into New Cross Gate via Old Kent Road, but needs to secure funding.

The new station at New Cross Gate is also part of proposals, and would be integrated with the current station to allow passengers to change from London Overground and National Rail services.

A further extension of the Bakerloo line beyond Lewisham has also been proposed, which could potentially bring the Tube to Ladywell, Catford and Lower Sydenham.

The extension would make the wider south London area more accessible than it ever has been before, and is expected to give a boost to the local economy, create more local jobs and in turn impact on the housing crisis.

Cllr Brenda Dacres, Lewisham Council’s cabinet member for parks, neighbourhoods and transport, said:  “I’m backing the Bakerloo because it will bring new jobs, more affordable homes and much improved transport links to Lewisham.

“Travelling from Lewisham to the West End will be eight minutes quicker, there will be a train every two to three minutes, and it is central to unlocking the future economic growth in Lewisham.”

Southwark and Lewisham councils are working with the Mayor and TfL to build a case for the Bakerloo line extension.

If central government approves plans for the extension and the funding needed is secured, construction could begin in 2023.
