A 16-year-old boy has been left “devastated” because his catholic school is refusing to let him attend prom.

Kyle Gordon is a student of St Thomas More Catholic Comprehensive and has been told he must stay away from Friday’s (July 6) prom because he has not done enough extra-curricular activities.

However, Allan Gordon, Kyle’s dad, believes the head teacher is punishing his son after he clashed with the family last year.

The school took offence when Kyle turned up with hair on his face in 2017.

As a solution, they forced him to shave in school using a razor.

Mr Gordon said: “Kyle had never used a razor in his life before. He only had about four or five hairs on his chin, bumfluff.

“He cut himself to bits. Obviously my wife went mad. We went to the council and we made them change their rule.

“The head obviously didn’t like that and has held a grudge ever since. This is his way of getting back at my wife.”

At the time of publishing the head teacher had not got back to News Shopper with a comment.

In a letter seen by this newspaper, Mr Ryan wrote to the boy’s family to explain why he was not allowed to prom.

He wrote: “The end of year Ball is an event, which was set up by me as a celebration of the life of the school. Heads of Year allow attendance to the event based on criteria coordinated by them; one of the criteria is participation in the life of the school.

“Your son has not participated at all with regard to extra-curricular or other activities and therefore cannot attend.”

Over 800 have signed a petition to allow Kyle to go to his prom.

He has already spent £180 on a suit and Mr Gordon said his son learned the news last Friday.

He added: “He was devastated. They said he did not do enough of the school curriculum but he did.

“There are lots of kids who didn’t do anything, but they are going. This is all because my wife exposed them last year."

After the razor incident, the director for children’s services of Greenwich wrote to Kyle’s parents to say there was “evidence to confirm that a professional has behaved in a way that was inappropriate, it caused immense emotional distress to your son and the child was physically harmed as a result albeit minor”.
