A GROUP which transformed a rubbish dump into sports playing fields for the community has held a fun day.
Charity the Lewisham Sports Consortium, known as LSportsC, has spent £70,000 creating the facility for residents on the Bellingham Estate, Catford.
The event, off Firhill Road, gave people a chance to try their hand at a variety of sports, including netball, badminton and cricket.
Among the 300 visitors was England football player Leanne Sanderson and Great Britain sprinter Marlon Devonish.
After leasing the land from the council in 2001, LSportsC turned it back into training fields.
The cost of the work was mainly covered by the group's own fundraising.
The fun day was held to encourage sports groups in the area to use the facilities.
LSportsC secretary Mike Garrick said: "It was a showcase event to show what's possible on the site."
