The man responsible for transforming “tatty” land by Beckenham Waitrose into a colourful guerilla garden says he will keep going despite repeated vandalism.

Kiran Vaidya, 37, brightened up the land in Southend Road free of charge in May.

News Shopper:

However, this week he posted on the Beckenham Appreciation Facebook group informing residents his plan to stop working on the garden.

He wrote: “Due to frequent vandalism I am no longer going to maintain my guerilla garden project by Waitrose - it was nice while it lasted but I am unable to keep replacing the (intentionally) damaged plants.

“There’s a few bits and bobs left but I won’t be replacing or updating the site from now on. Such a shame.”

The post inspired dozens of comments of support for Kiran, including from people who thanked him for planting flowers in the first place.

The replies made Kiran change his mind, and the gardener is now giving it another chance.

He told News Shopper: “After the nice response I am thinking of trying one more time. The fact people have seen it and appreciated it was nice.

“The damage is very odd and it was only the pots that were affected, the plants on the ground were fine.”

Kiran believes scissors may have been used to cut the root of his plants.

In May he told News Shopper he was blown away by the response from the Beckenham community to the guerilla garden.
