A famous couple are selling what is believed to be the oldest house in Bromley.

The Old Cottage, in Shortlands, dates back to at least the 17th century, but is rumoured to have been standing even in 1548.

Brian Murphy, known for roles in George and Mildred and Last of the Summer Wine, and his wife Linda Regan, best known for being in Hi-de-Hi, have lived in the cottage for 23 years.

The acting couple believe HG Wells stayed in the cottage and Enid Blyton wrote about the home in one of her books.

Mrs Regan, who is also a crime writer, said: “I've known this cottage since I was a child and used to play here often, so when we had the chance to buy it we snapped it up.

“It's a beautiful and charming cottage and we will be very sad to leave it as we have wonderful memories of our time here but we hope someone else will love it as much as we have."

Husband Brian added: “The cottage has such an interesting history and you really feel like it's seen a lot of life in its centuries on this site. It’s also nice to be surrounded by a house that’s older than me.”

Branch manager of JDM Estate Agents, Andrew Aquilina, said: “This beautiful cottage has been enjoyed and loved by the current owners and has provided them with their hideaway from the hustle and bustle of London.

“Characterful cottages like this in such a central location are gems that are rare to come to the market. I truly recommend viewing the Old Cottage to appreciate all that it has to offer.”

The Old Cottage is valued at £900,000.
