An 80-year-old man has spoken out about children using scooters in public after his wife was crashed into in Bromley.

Malcolm Morgan, of Cumberland Road, said his wife, Janet, could have been “seriously injured” after colliding with a little girl on a scooter.

Janet, 53, was hit with the scooter just inside the main entrance of The Glades shopping centre on Saturday (May 5) morning.

Her husband told News Shopper: “She is fine now but gets upset when she talks about it. She was extremely shaken and had to get away from the scene quickly to recover.”

Janet’s sunglasses were broken during the smash – and Malcolm warned that a shard of glass could have gone into somebody’s eye.

“It all happened in a quick second,” Malcolm said. “Shoppers need to know what they are facing. Come the summer months there will be more kids out on them.

“I have been in Marks and Spencer before and the kids come around in the aisles in scooters and trainers with wheels – that’s before we even start talking about skateboards!”

The furious husband said shopping centres should have signs dissuading parents from letting kids ride on scooters.

Malcolm pleaded with mums and dads to “keep their children under control” and that it is “inexcusable” to let them ride scooters in shopping centres.

He added: “A lot of elderly people who struggle to walk get out for a bit of exercise – and they should feel safe in the shopping environment, but they are not.”

The father of the girl, who Malcolm said looked five or six, offered to reimburse the woman for the broken sunglasses, but the couple wanted to return home as soon as possible.
