If you used every single penny earned it would take you until August just to pay a year’s rent in parts of south-east London.

In Bromley, someone with an average rent of £14,400 a year on the average salary of £31,053 after tax has to work until June 19 to pay their rent for the year.

The date is June 26 in Bexley, August 3 in Lewisham and August 16 in Greenwich, according to BBC News analysis.

It’s not much better outside of London in north Kent, with Dartford’s date still more than a month away on June 6.

These are far from the only depressing stats about how much it costs to rent a home these days.

A third of the millennial generation could still be renting by the time they retire, unable to get on the property ladder, a report has warned.

And the situation for older people isn’t any brighter, with another study finding thousands of over-50s in the baby boomer generation have borrowed money, including from their own children, to cover their rent.

This is due to rising rent costs, with London seeing the gap between rents and wages widen the most.

Your renting story

So renting is undoubtedly very expensive but for many people it is the only option.

We want to put a human angle on this and show the reality, good or bad, of renting a home in SE London and north Kent.

We want to highlight some of the places people are renting, how much they are paying, whether they are getting good value and what their hopes are for the future.

To do this we need you to get in touch with us to tell your renting story.

We hope to turn the stories into a series of articles on News Shopper’s website.

If you’d like to get involved, we need your name (or to at least publish your first name), your age, the area where you rent, what you pay and of course some photos showing what you’re getting for your money. In this case, we’re happy to leave out the exact street you live on and who your landlord is.

Whether you’re living alone, you’re in a relationship or you have a family, whether you feel you’re being ripped off for the price or you’ve found a rare bargain, we want to hear your tale and see what you’re renting.

Who out there has got the best, or worst, rental deal?
