These superb photos show Thamesmead in the 1970s, as an appeal is made for images and memories to help mark the town’s 50th birthday.

Housing charity Peabody is publishing a photographic book on Thamesmead as part of the half-century celebrations and is asking Londoners to contribute their recollections of the town from 1968 onwards.

The book will feature images that capture the daily life, personal moments and the unique history of the town.

To submit images which could be used in the book contact lisa.drew@peabody.org.uk

The project is part of the Thamesmead Community Archive where people can share old photos, newspapers and leaflets from Thamesmead’s past to preserve them for future generations.

Interested residents are also invited this Saturday (April 21) to listen to photographer George Plemper discuss his photos of Thamesmead in the 70s.

The event takes place at the Thamesmead Information Hub, 216 Yarnton Way DA8 4AX where Plemper’s photos are on display.

Adriana Marques, head of cultural strategy for Thamesmead at Peabody, said: “Thamesmead has such a rich cultural and social history. It is a special place and we are pleased to be able to bring this to a wider audience through a book towards the end of the 50th year.

“Before then we’ve got the superb George Plemper exhibition and later this year the Thamesmead Festival is going to be the best ever.

“We’ll also be launching a live radio station and re-opening the iconic Lakeside Centre by Southmere Lake.

“Not everyone realises how teeming with talent Thamesmead is, and we’re having the best time working with the community to celebrate all that is great about the town.”
