A water leak on a Beckenham road, which was first reported last week, has still not been fixed.

Concerns over road safety on Elmers End Road, particularly for cyclists, have been raised on social media after a pothole emerged.

Thames Water say the leak was first brought to their attention on Wednesday (March 21), but they admitted a solution to the leak was not straight forward.

A spokeswoman told News Shopper: "Due to the leak being close to the centre of the road and near a busy junction the repair needs to be done at night. Getting it fixed is a priority for us but it has to be done at a time when it will be safest for our team and least disruptive to traffic.

"The job will be complicated as we also need to replace a valve, which controls the flow of water through the pipe, before we can begin fixing the leak. We’ll do everything we can to complete both jobs as quickly as possible."

One social media user wrote: "It looks like it could actually become a sink hole. It’s getting worse everyday and when repairs start it will cause gridlock."

Since the freezing temperatures and rapid thaw earlier this month - Thames Water has prioritised leaked pipes directly affecting water supplies. The leak on Elmers End Road is not affecting a water supply in Beckenham.

Thames Water say work on Elmers End Road will commence tomorrow (March 28).
