A group of parents tired of the crumbling and sparse facilities of their local park are confident they can inspire change.

One such parent is Kate Carr, 37, member of the new Friends of Kings Meadow group.

Kings Meadow, in Burnt Ash Lane, Sundridge Park, is a large field home to a small children’s play area.

The mum of a six-year-old boy and four-year-old girl described the conditions of the playground.

She told News Shopper: “Parents are often moaning about how awful Kings Meadow is. It has got much worse as our kids are getting a little bit older.

“There is nothing for children over four. Rocking chairs are broken, metal equipment is very tired and you can’t see the children from the one circular bench in the park.

“The equipment is limited and not fit for purpose, with broken tarmac in places."

The group – founded in January - is hoping to transform the park to make it more accessible to disabled children, but they will not be supported by council funding.

Reliant on community and business revenue, Friends of Kings Meadow wants to deliver modern equipment for children of all ages and abilities, construct a ‘green gym’ around the perimeter for people to get fit and introduce a biodiversity garden.

Ms Carr said the group was hopeful of making such improvements by 2020.

She said: “We are really confident we will see positive changes in the next 12 to 24 months. We are completely dependent on raising money, but we have very committed parents and the project is moving forward quickly.

“The reaction has been really positive.”

To deliver on these ambitions - it is expected to cost an estimated £200,000.
