Bromley Council has received national recognition after fining over 80 people who have exploited disability parking badges.

The British Parking Association awarded Bromley Council for their Blue Badge misuse campaign in the ‘Parking in the Community’ category.

Criminal records and fines of up to £1,000 have been dished out to dozens of people caught misusing the badge.

Most of the fraudsters used the disability badge of a relative or a friend during the holder’s absence.

Executive councillor for environment William Huntington-Thresher said: “I’m pleased our work to stop Blue Badge misuse by explaining and encouraging has been successful, and this award recognises everyone for playing their part.

“As well as prosecuting offenders, we are committed to ensuring Blue Badge holders know the rules and it’s vitally important that they explain the law to relatives, as our prosecutions show that they are mainly responsible for misuse."

He went on to recommend the scheme to other councils.

Bromley Council launched its crackdown in 2016 and has claimed thousands of pounds in fines.

In February – News Shopper named and shamed seven drivers who were charged and fined a total of £3,677 for avoiding parking costs.

Having a Blue Badge allows you to park freely for two hours in bays or three hours in yellow lines.
