A man had to be rushed to hospital with smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at a derelict pub in Deptford.

The basement at the Lord Palmerston pub on Childers Street caught fire shortly after midnight last night (March 6).

London Fire Brigade were called to the scene at 50 minutes after midnight with four fire engines and 21 firefighters attending.

One man on a second floor flat had to be rescued by ladder and was taken to hospital.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 2.11am and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Plans to redevelop and re-open the Lord Palmerston pub were rejected in 2016 and again by the Planning Inspectorate on appeal in September last year.

Campaigners, who called the pub a "heritage asset", were against the plans because they reduced the size of the pub and in their eyes would have made it non-viable as a business.
