If you are looking for something to do this weekend how about going to see a film?

We have put together a list of some of the best cinemas in south London for you to choose from.

We all know about the usual Cineworlds and Vue cinemas so these are the independent venues for you to see the best films.

So if you are looking for a good date venue, these are lacking the commercial edge of the chain cinemas.

Greenwich Picturehouse

This is a great cinema to sit back and relax in, with comfy chairs and state-of-the-art screens. You can forget about the uncomfortable seating in the commercial cinemas, these are huge and welcoming. Greenwich Picturehouse is right near the DLR line so it’s nice and easy to get to of an evening. There is also floor-to-ceiling glass windows so you can see the city as you wait for your film.

Deptford Cinema

Lewisham used to be one of only two London boroughs with no dedicated cinema. Deptford Cinema is a not-for-profit community-led project that decided to build a new venue for film and arts in Deptford Broadway. The cost of a cinema ticket today can be upwards of £12 and even more when you factor in the travel for Lewisham residents to nearby Greenwich or Southwark, or central London - it is increasingly no longer an affordable night out. Cinema should be for everybody, more often, and that’s the ethos of Deptford Cinema, providing interesting cinema, that’s also accessible.

Curzon Cinema - Goldsmiths

Curzon paired up with Goldsmiths, University of London a couple of years ago now to create a state-of-the-art 101-seat auditorium. Because of its small size the experience of going to the cinema is more intimate and cosy. Goldsmiths screens the very best independent and blockbuster film releases and it is open to everyone. Curzon Goldsmiths is open weekday evening and all day weekends.

The Thinking Cinema - Lewisham

BFI Neighbourhood Cinema is a space that listens to its community, voices and opinions and offer films accordingly. It invites all new people to the area as well as those who have lived here all their lives. It offers family films, art films, world films, and films by local filmmakers.

Rivoli Ballroom - Crofton Park

This is a beautiful building and certainly adds an atmosphere to whatever film you are watching. The Rivoli does pop-up film screenings but not all the time, so you will need to check. It shows the classics and anything you can sing along to so really, what more could you want or need?
