A total of 11 Bexley food premises have so far won an award for healthy eating following the launch of a new London-wide scheme.
Public Health and Environment Health teams have joined together to encourage businesses in the borough to sign up to the Healthier Catering Commitment.
The voluntary scheme, currently run in 20 boroughs, allows for those who successfully apply to receive recognition and a door sticker to display as meeting the standard on food hygiene websites.
Councillor Peter Craske, Bexley Council’s cabinet member for community safety, environment, and leisure, said: “We are all much more health conscious these days. We want more options and we want to know more about how what goes on behind the kitchen doors - and that includes how our food is cooked.
"As the scheme grows in popularity I would imagine that restaurant and takeaway visitors will start to check for the Commitment sign as they already check the Food Hygiene status.
“Thanks to our Environmental Health teams we already have some of the safest places to eat in London – why not aim for the healthiest as well?”
Businesses wishing to take part must have a food hygiene rating of 3, 4, or 5 and meet a minimum of seven criteria from a 25-item list – including conditions relating to the use of fats, oils and salt, as well as the availability of lower sugar drinks and snacks, plus fruit and vegetables.
Dr Anjan Ghosh, Bexley’s director of public health and deputy director of health and wellbeing, said: “In Bexley we are committed to ensuring the healthy choice is the easy choice for our residents. Having the Healthy Catering Commitment in place is an easy way for our residents to know that there are healthy options available to them.
“The businesses involved see the value of offering the healthy choice to their customers and we are very happy to be working with them.”
