Millwall scored twice in three second-half minutes to extend their unbeaten run to six games as they defeated Reading at the Madejski.

Mahlon Romeo’s cross-come-shot was deflected into his own net by Leandro Bacuna on 70 minutes and just three minutes later Lee Gregory doubled the Lions’ advantage.

Here are five things we learned...

Fred Onyedinma takes his chance

It was just the 21-year-old’s fifth league start of the season and by far his most impressive. Reading could not cope with his pace and power during the first-half and as the Royals defence tired, Onyedinma took full advantage on the counter attack.

Most of Millwall’s good moments in the first-half came through him, most notably when he beat two players before finding Jed Wallace, who teed up Gregory and then minutes later when he carried the ball 40 yards across the field to Conor McLaughlin, who combined with Wallace to create a chance for the full-back.

Onyedinma then came close to helping himself to his first league goal of the campaign, but Vito Mannone reacted well to block his close-range effort after the Italian had dropped Wallace’s cross into his path.

Unbeaten run goes on

If it wasn’t for a poor second-half display at Carrow Road on New Year’s Day, Millwall’s current unbeaten run would stand at ten games. Since that defeat, the Lions have won three and drawn three in all competitions and it stands at six.

Despite that impressive run, before today, the Lions had drawn three of their last four games after back-to-back draws at home against Rochdale and Derby County after the stunning win at Leeds United two weeks ago, so they will have welcomed the three points.

That undefeated streak will be tested on Friday night when promotion contenders Cardiff City visit the Den.

Away wins are like London buses

It took the Lions 13 games to win on the road this season before their thrilling late victory at Elland Road last month and it looked for long periods against Reading like it would be a familiar story.

Millwall totally dominated the game, restricting the Royals to just one attempt on target during the 90 minutes, but were frustrated for large periods as they were unable to break down Jaap Stam’s side.

Gregory had a goal chalked off before Steve Morison struck the bar during the first-half and it took until 20 minutes from time for Neil Harris’ side to make their domination count as Romeo’s cross found the back of the net via a deflection before Gregory’s second goal.

Steve Morison’s assist tally continues to grow

It took Millwall’s recently named captain 25 games to get off the mark this season and he added just two assists in that period. But since the 34-year-old struck the winner against Queens Park Rangers, his form has been remarkable.

Morison has been involved in eight goals in seven games since Boxing Day, six of those being assists and five, coming in Millwall’s last three games.

He currently sits joint fourth on the list for most Championship assists in the 2017/18 campaign, just three off Barry Douglas, Luke Freeman and Robert Snodgrass who lead the way with nine.

His fine perfectly executed pass set Gregory in the clear, who helped himself to his sixth Championship goal of the season to seal the win.

Another impressive following from the travelling Lions

2,661 Millwall fans made the 90-mile round trip to Reading and it was the sixth consecutive Championship game and eleventh in total this season that the Lions have been backed by more than 1,000 supporters.

Yesterday’s following was also the second biggest away from the Den this term, with only Fulham (3,342) in November topping it.
