As motorists will be well aware, some of the roads in south-east London and north Kent are in a bad state.

Plagued by the scourge of potholes, and the repair bills that come with them, driving around the area can be a bumpy ride in more ways than one.

Today we’re highlighting Department for Transport data that shows there are miles of road in need of repair.

We’re also appealing for your photos showing the biggest potholes. We’ll publish the photo to show the conditions drivers face, and we’re offering a reward to whoever shares the picture showing the worst damage – see below for details.

Based on road examinations in the 12 months to March 2017, which were done by scanner machines and in some cases human inspection to identify sections worn by use or that had ruts, bumps or potholes, these are the figures for our local authorities:

Bexley

Two per cent of Bexley's 43 miles of council-run A roads were judged to be likely in need of maintenance.

Two per cent of the B and C roads were likely to be in need of repair, and 12 per cent of unclassified roads.

In total there are 305 miles of minor roads in Bexley.

Road conditions are better than they were five years ago, when four per cent of Bexley's A roads were likely in need of repairs.

Bromley

Two per cent of Bromley's 56 miles of council-run A roads were judged to be likely in need of maintenance.

Two per cent of the B and C roads were likely to be in need of repair.

In total there are 507 miles of minor roads in Bromley.

Five years ago three per cent of Bromley's A roads were likely in need of repairs.

Greenwich

Four per cent of the 41 miles of A roads run by the council may be in need of repair.

In the previous 12 months three per cent of A roads required maintenance.

Four per cent of the B and C roads were likely in need of work.

In total there are 272 miles of minor roads in Greenwich.

Road conditions are better than they were five years ago, when eight per cent of Greenwich's A roads were likely in need of repairs.

Lewisham

Six per cent of Lewisham's 24 miles of council-run A roads were judged to be likely in need of maintenance.

Five per cent of the B and C roads were likely to be in need of repair, and 60 per cent of unclassified roads, some of the highest figures in England.

In total there are 260 miles of minor roads in Lewisham.

Road conditions are better than they were five years ago, when seven per cent of Lewisham's A roads were likely in need of repairs.

Kent

Three per cent or 15 miles of the 500 miles of A roads run by the council may be in need of repair.

In the previous 12 months two per cent of A roads, or 10 miles, required maintenance.

Five per cent of the B and C roads were likely in need of work. Unclassified roads, small lanes used for local traffic, also required repairs, with 22 per cent likely needing maintenance.

In total there are 4,982 miles of minor roads in Kent.

Five years ago seven per cent of Kent's A roads were likely in need of repairs.

The condition of unclassified roads has declined, as from April 2011 to March 2012 there were 18 per cent of minor roads requiring improvement.
