A woman from Orpington has walked nearly 300,000 steps – or the distance between London and Manchester - this month in an effort to raise money for leading charity Cancer Research UK.

Holly Barrie, 21, joined the charity’s Walk All Over Cancer initiative which involves participants walking 10,000 steps every day throughout the month of June, which is roughly the equivalent of five miles.

Over 30 days that becomes approximately 150 miles, according to its website.

“This means the world to me, it shows that I can push myself to help others,” she said.

“If I can do this challenge, what is stopping me from doing everything else [that I want to do]?

“It has helped me cope with my anxiety attacks as I am more focused, and I know that I am doing good for other people.”

This means a lot more to Hollie given that she lost her aunt, Shell, to a cancer-related illness almost three years ago.

Close family friend Shane, who also suffered from a cancer-related illness, began rounds of treatment that involved trips to the United States in December last year.

Now she has accrued her steps by walking from Lee to Bromley and Petts Wood, or on long walks with her partner Sam.

Hollie aims to reach her target of £100 by Friday (June 30) before embarking on the London Bridges Challenge for Diabetes UK later in October, walking in memory of uncle Steve and grandfather David.
