Fans are speculating who might be the next Time Lord, but thanks to a wealth of talented actors the next Doctor could well be from south London.

After the shock news of Peter Capaldi’s departure after three years holding the sonic screwdriver, we came up with 10 actors from south London who may be next to take the controls of the Tardis.

Bookies have also slashed the odds of the next Doctor being a woman, and Joanna Lumley may well be the thirteenth Time Lord.

Oliva Colman

BAFTA-winning actress Olivia Colman is the favourite to become the next Doctor, with odds as low as 5/1. The 43-year-old star, who starred in the Croydon-set comedy Peep Show, has spoken in the past about her love for the series but is remaining tight-lipped about if she’s been offered a role.

Joanna Lumley

The beloved British actress has a home in Clapham, and she has been hotly tipped in the past to become the first female Doctor. At the tender age of 70, Joanna Lumley might not be up for wrestling with Cybermen, but she’ll be more than able to handle naughty Daleks.

John Boyega

Star Wars hero John Boyega is an outside choice for the next Doctor. Fresh from defeating the First Order in Star Wars The Force Awakens, the 24-year-old who went to college in Wandsworth and uni in Greenwich could well be making the jump to television in a bid to save time and space from evil.

Stephen Fry

An outside hopeful to become the 13th Doctor is national treasure London-born Stephen Fry. The eccentric actor would be perfectly suited behind the controls of the Tardis. The former QI host once starred in adverts explaining British culture to foreigners arriving at Heathrow Airport so he could easily talk to aliens about Earth's ways.

Idris Elba

Hardman actor Idris Elba has been linked to the Bond role for years but since he keeps getting trumped by other Hollywood actors, the 44-year-old from Hackney may well swap his Walther PPK for a Sonic Screwdriver and move back to the small screen. He starred in Thor: Dark World which was shot on location at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.

Jack Dee

If producers fancy turning the Time Lord into a darker character, then they may look no further than Bromley’s own Jack Dee. The 55-year-old stand-up comedian has starred in sitcoms before and his dry sense of humour would help him overcome any dangerous situation.

Martin Clunes

Rank outside Martin Clunes could bring a bit of ‘Men Behaving Badly’ charm to the role. The Croydon-born star could well become the next Doctor if producers want to make the hero of mankind more wholesome. He has most recently been hitting our screens starring as Doc Martin, but the 55-year-old might want to go on a journey through time and space instead.

Keeley Hazell

Model-turned-actress Keeley Hazell could also become the first female Time Lord. The talented actress, 30, was at one-time the world’s most famous glamour model, before moving to Hollywood to pursue her acting dream. The window fitter’s daughter, from Lewisham, attended Ravensbourne School, and has starred in a string of cameo appearances but has yet to cut her teeth on a sizeable role.

Ben Daniels

Ben Daniels has been in the frame once before. The Cutting It actor who lives in south London once said he had been approached, adding: “I was asked, and when I eventually managed to peel myself off the ceiling, I said, ‘Yeah, of course it’d be something I’d be interested in doing’, and I was hugely excited by it.”

Hugh Bonneville

Blackheath’s own Hugh Bonneville could swap Downton Abbey for saving the universe. The 53-year-old actor could swap being the Earl of Grantham for being Lord of Time in a surprising twist that would no doubt increase interest in the show among housewives.
