A Dartford teen is carving out a career in skiing after she was selected for Team GB.

Lily Martin, of Devon Road, South Darenth, is setting her sights on the slopes, competing on dry ski slopes all over the UK and the mountains of Europe.

The skier has shown such talent that she’s now been picked for the England Alpine Ski Squad.

The fourteen-year-old said: “It has been hard being away from my friends, family and school but I have really enjoyed the experience, made lots of new friends, improved my skiing skills and hopefully I have improved my German.

“I will find myself at the bottom of the ladder but I’m looking forward to the climb ahead and the challenges that being in Team GB brings.”

Speaking to News Shopper Dad Bram Martin said: “She’s a fierce little thing.

“My wife is always worried but I’m not at all.

“It’s built her character, helped her overcome difficulties and helped her become a well rounded lovely individual.

“She meets and interacts with so many people it’s fantastic.”

Lily suffered from severe dyslexia and struggled at school.

But when she found skiing her ability to engage with academia changed completely and is now a top class student.

The Farringtons School pupil, trains and races for Essex Ski Racing Club and the Bromley Race Club and looks set for big things.

Snowsport England chief executive and British Ski and Snowboard Board director, Tim Fawke, said: “Lily is one of our athletes who has followed the talent pathway from her early years skiing and is well on track to achieve her potential.”

Lily is looking to spend as much time as possible training and racing on-snow this winter, before a busy summer of ski racing in the UK.

The talented racer has already taken a podium finish in Leogang, Austria the Welsh Championships in Champery, France with two second place podiums finishes and bronze in the Aiglon College Cup in Villars, Switzerland.
