A jazz musician has recorded named after and dedicated to a street near where he grew up in Plumstead.
Adrian Reid - who has played with the likes of Courtney Pine, Chaka Khan, Chet Baker and Mica Paris – releases Nyanza St on August 29.
A founder member of soul outfit Midnite Express and Jazz Warriors in the 1980s and a musical director in the West End, Adrian told us he had planned to make the record for a long time but has to wait for the right opportunity between work commitments and the availability of band members.
In the end, the self-financed project was recorded over three days last summer and is now ready for release.
Adrian said: “Why Nyanza St? Well I was born in Lewisham and moved to Plumstead aged five.
“Nyanza St was en route from my house to Timbercroft Primary School. I was always fascinated by the name and its origins.
“The late South African musician Bheki Mseleku wrote Ntuli Street which recalled his life in Soweto.
“He was a friend and source of inspiration. Nyanza St is in part a dedication and a metaphor for the road I have travelled.”
