Hundreds of commuters were evacuated from Woolwich Arsenal station when a billboard caught fire.

The incident happened at about 7pm yesterday evening (July 19).

It is thought the hot sunshine may have caused the blaze, as temperatures soared above 30C, however a spokesman for the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said this was still under investigation.

The spokesman added a 7x5 metre advertising hoarding on platform two was destroyed, while about 200 people had to be evacuated while the situation was dealt with.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to the scene.

The LFB was called at 6.58pm and the fire was under control by 7.33pm.

Crews from Plumstead, East Greenwich and Eltham attended.
