The owner of a Belvedere hair and beauty salon has been fined £991 after a teen went for a sunbed session without any age checks.

Denise Voice, 63 of Colyers Lane, Erith owner of Abliss in Nuxley Road appeared at Bexley Magistrates’ Court on May 9.

The court heard that a 16 year-old girl visited the salon on November 20 last year and purchased a sunbed session without being asked to prove her age.

Although she was asked if she was over 18, no proof of age was sought and the 16-year-old was allowed to purchase a tanning session and enter the sunbed booth.

Bexley Magistrates Court also heard that on August 19 2013, the premises had also failed a “test visit” by Bexley Trading Standards after the 18-year-old wasn’t asked for ID.

Voice pleaded guilty to two offences for failing to make sure that an under-aged person did not purchase a tanning session and that they entered a restricted sunbed zone at the premises.

She was fined £400 for both offences and must also pay £466 investigation costs, £85 costs and a £40 victim surcharge.

Councillor Peter Craske, Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Environment and Leisure, said: “We welcome this decision by the courts and I pay credit to the Trading Standards team for their work.

"The law is very clear on this matter.

“We hope other businesses will note the court's decision so that people who are too young to use such products won't be put at risk."
