The Chinese New Year kicked off in style as hundreds gathered to ring in the Year of the Monkey in Orpington.

The Orpington Chinese School, based in Warren Road Primary, in Warren Road, threw a banquet for the third year in a row marking the start of the Chinese calender today.

The biggest ever New Year’s Eve gala, more than 250 people joined in the celebrations on Sunday (February 7), which was attended by Bromley mayor Cllr Kim Botting.

MORE TOP STORIES A spread of more than 100 authentic Chinese dishes was put on, and attendees enjoyed a tug of war which Cllr Botting’s husband, Michael, joined in with.

The God of Wealth also paid a visit in full costume, handing out red packets containing money to every child.

Gigi Chen, headteacher of the school and organiser of the party, told News Shopper: “We are so excited to celebrate Chinese New Year's Eve with so many local Chinese families.
