But a Bromley College spokeswoman said students and staff were not evacuated.

In a statement, she said: "We can confirm that during a routine health and safety check we discovered a very small amount of a potentially hazardous substance in the science laboratory store.

"We notified the relevant agencies who have safely removed the substance.

"Students have been informed and re-assured that the incident is now dealt with."

The further and higher education college has more than 10,000 students on its books and around 650 staff.
