A paramedic who was involved in a crash in Bromley while on an emergency call rushed to treat an injured driver, despite being badly shaken himself.

The ambulance car the paramedic was travelling in with blue lights and sirens on was badly damaged after it smashed into a blue Smart vehicle in Kentish Way at the junction with Masons Hill yesterday (January 20).

Motorcyclist, Sarah Brockbank, who witnessed the crash at around 2.35pm, said the shaken paramedic immediately got out of the ambulance vehicle and hurried to treat the woman driving the Smart car.

The 27-year-old student pharmacy technician told News Shopper: “The paramedic was really quite shaken. He had been on his way to a cardiac arrest.

“He immediately started treating her, administering gas and air and bringing out painkillers.

“She [the female driver] was so upset, she was in floods of tears. Apparently, she didn’t hear or see the ambulance.”

Bodywork from the front of the ambulance car was left strewn across the road following the collision.

Ms Brockbank, of Verdant Lane, Hither Green, said: “Bits were strewn all over the road.

“It [the crash] was pretty loud. The ambulance must have been going about 30 mph.

“The doors of the Smart car were quite difficult to open because of the damage.

“As I opened them, there was smoke from the air bags coming out.”

Ms Brockbank sat and comforted the woman, who is believed to be in 30s, before her friends arrived and she was taken in an ambulance to King’s College Hospital as a priority.

“I was holding her hand and trying to keep her calm. The paramedic was brilliant,” Ms Brockbank added.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "A London Ambulance Service car was involved in a road traffic collision with another car at Kentish Way in Bromley at 2.33pm today.

"We sent an ambulance crew, a single responder by car and two incident response officers to the scene."
