A petition launched in a bid to stop rapper Kanye West covering Beckenham icon David Bowie’s music has amassed more than 6,000 signatures in 24 hours.

The US rapper has started recording covers of the late musician’s tracks, putting his own spin on some of them by rapping over Bowie’s music, according to reports.

Despite no official confirmation from Kanye or his representatives, thousands have signed the petition to stop him doing a Yeezy Stardust on us.

The Daily Star sparked the speculation by claiming that Kanye had been busy recording a tribute album to Bowie with versions of hits such as Rebel Rebel and Heroes.

The tabloid quoted an unnamed source as saying: “Some are straightforward covers with Kanye actually singing.

“On others he is rapping with his own lyrics over Bowie’s music.”

Peter Piranha, who started the 38 Degrees petition, wrote: “David Bowie was one of the single most important musicians of the 20th and 21st century, it would be a sacrilege to let it be ruined by Kanye West.”

One supporter wrote: “He’s an untalented a***wipe! How dare he use David Bowie to cash in on more money!”

Another wrote: “The bloke cannot sing or play anything musical. He couldn't lace David's boots.

“Remember his annihilation of Bohemian Rhapsody at Glastonbury? Shame on his over inflated ego.”
