Residents have expressed their shock after a 35-year-old man became the second person to die after being hit by a train at Sydenham Hill in leess than a month.

British Transport Police officers were called to the station in College Road at 8.15pm last night (November 19) to reports that a man had been hit by the train.

The man, from London, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from London Ambulance Service (LAS).

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

“The man’s family have been informed.”

Residents expressed their sorrow over the death, which happened less than a month after another man died after being hit by a train at the station

"I'm really sorry this has happened, I hope no one else will do it. 

"I hope other people won't follow suit and think this is the place. I'm just very sad this has happened."

They added the local Reverend Bernhard Schunemann, from the neighbouring Parish Church of St Stephen, went to the station to offer assistance. 

He previously spoke to News Shopper after the death last month, expressing his sadness on behalf of the community. 

Pensioner Russell Baird, who lives next to the station, said the death was: "Not very clever, it's sad to hear."

A station worker was shocked to learn of the death, as they had just left the station after finishing their shift moments before tragedy struck.

He added: "I've just come here today and heard about it. I'd just left at that time, I just missed it.

"I don't know the circumstances it's just sad, very sad."

The fatality came just hours before a person was taken to hospital after falling between a train and platform at Lewisham Station.

Services were disrupted and on diversion following the incident, with tickets accepted on buses instead.
