Bromley council is selling off part of its own building in a bid to cut costs.

Plans to reduce the Civic Centre, in Stockwell Close, were approved by the council’s own executive committee yesterday (September 17).

While the council would still stay in part of the building, the rest will be sold for re-development.

They will keep the park land, including the lake, and the multi-storey car park along with North Block and Stockwell Building.

The fate of the Grade II listed Old Palace – which forms part of the former Bishop of Rochester’s palace – will be decided later.

MORE TOP STORIES Special consideration will given to its future due to its status.

Leader of the council, Coun Stephen Carr, stated that as the council reduces in size it does need as much space.

He said: “We will look for efficiency savings anywhere and everywhere we can, not just because this forms part of sound financial management but also because this protects our frontline services.”

It is estimated the sale will reduce the running costs by £800,000 per year, and possibly generate some profit.

The council needs to find £50 million in savings over the next four years out of a budget of roughly £200 million.

The public are expected to be able to comment on proposals at a later date.
