A Call the Midwife star was 'blown away' by the modern Greenwich Birth Centre - a far cry from the show's 60s set.

Laura Main, who plays Sister Bernadette in the hit TV show, met with parents and staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital facility today (Aug 17).

Ms Main said: "I have been blown away by the wonderful facilities of the Greenwich Birth Centre today.

"It was fantastic to meet the midwives and hear such lovely stories from mothers who have used the centre."

The new midwifery-led unit has had nothing but positive feedback since in opened in April, and staff invited happy mothers back.

Amongst them was Laura Snaith, who gave birth to daughter Emily Gordon four months ago, in the ward's birthing pool.

Sarah Massey also had a water birth, and is now a mum to baby girl Annabeth, with husband Rob.

The first-time mother said of her experience: "It was fantastic.

"All the midwives were very friendly and we were able to do a water birth which is what we wanted - it went really smoothly.

"The midwives were so good at keeping us calm, and as relaxed as we could be given the situation.

"We would absolutely use the Birth Centre again and I would recommend it to anyone."

In addition to the centre's four birthing rooms, it has five single en-suite postnatal rooms and aids such as a birthing pool, stools, slings and birthing balls.

Head of midwifery for Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust Helen Knower said: "Women’s choice is at the top of our agenda and the new Birth Centre offers women the choice of giving birth in a beautiful and calm environment.

"As it is based in the maternity unit women have the added security of knowing they are in a hospital."

Trust chair Elizabeth Butler added: "Today has shown how much Greenwich Birth Centre means not only to our staff, but also to the local community.

"It has been wonderful to hear all the stories from women and their families who have used the Centre, as well as speak to some mums-to-be who are now even more excited to give birth under our care."
