Bromley manager Mark Goldberg is keeping his feet firmly on the ground after a winning start to life in the Conference on Saturday.

Despite falling behind to Wes York’s opener midway through the first half, goals from debutants Alex Wall, Sean Francis and Moses Emmanuel gave the Lillywhites a 3-1 win over Wrexham.

And even having made a dream start to life in non-league’s top tier with a victory over former Football League opposition, Goldberg refused to get carried away by the result.

He said: “We’re pleased with how we kicked off the season.

“Coming from a goal down quite early on I think we showed courage and conviction to come back and I’m pleased our heads didn’t go.

“We believed in ourselves and that we could get back in the game.”

Goldberg added: “We know that they're a new team so for us we’ve got Wrexham at a good time because they’ve got ten new players.

“That was what I was hoping we’d be able to take advantage of because later in the season they’ll be a lot stronger.

“We’re definitely not going to start believing in ourselves too much but we believe that we can compete.”

Two of Bromley's goals came from quick counter-attacks and Goldberg praised the performance of his defence in breaking up the play.

He said: “I said to the lads after the game it wasn’t just about how we broke away, how our pace caused them problems, it was the way our wingers and our front men defended for the team.

“We broke up their play and we stopped them from playing by defending very well.

“Anthony Cook was winning that ball in front of our back four in order for us to then go and break and it wasn't just him, Moses Emmanuel did the same and there was a lot of good work off the ball.”

Goldberg added: “We set out that way to a certain extent, we’ve got a lot of pace in the side and that’s just the way I’ve always like to play.

“What I’m very pleased about is I’ve got the quality of player that can defend as well as attack, it’s all about the final ball and if the final ball is right, we can beat teams.

“We showed today if we’re compact, then maybe we can compete at this level.”

Goldberg also reserved praise for new signing Wall whose first half strike put the Lillywhites into the lead.

The boss said: “I think Alex had quite a difficult pre-season, it's hard to settle in when you've gone a couple of years of just being a sub player and not getting enough game time and that's why he's here.

“He’s here because we believe in him and I've got two players Ben May and Alex Wall who will play a lot of football this year in that role and I'm really pleased for him he got his goal.”

The next two games will see Bromley travel to Woking and Grimsby.

And Goldberg stated Saturday's result would see his side go into those fixtures with added confidence.

He said: “We're going to play against teams that are more direct and we know we’re in for a very hard ride still.

“But in the next two games we’ll go in there with a bit more confidence having won today.”
