A new petition to save Lewisham Hospital has been set up after the start of a health service review for south east London.

Last month, News Shopper revealed how an NHS document called Our Healthier South East London was setting alarm bells ringing with talk of integrating services and changes to emergency care.

There is no mention of a threat to Lewisham’s A&E in the document, but the Save Lewisham Hospital campaign has already gathered more than 2,000 signatures against any such plan.

The petition states: “We fear plans are being made, once again, to propose closing Lewisham Hospital and selling-off its site.”

It adds: “We are on high alert, like we were before the announcement in 2012, and we want to use this petition to show that the people of Lewisham are ready and willing to defend their hospital again should our fears be proved right and a further closure plan materializes.”

A previous plan to downgrade Lewisham’s A&E was defeated by campaigners and Lewisham Council following a high court battle.
