Greenwich and Woolwich MP Matthew Pennycook cut the ribbon to open the new Sainsbury's in Charlton Riverside.

The new Sainsbury's will replace the Greenwich branch and create 140 additional jobs for the community.

The new store will be open from 7am until midnight on weekdays, until 11pm on Saturdays and 11am until 5pm on Sundays.

Project manager Colin Hope said: "We are proud to present the new Sainsbury's Charlton Riverside as a new shopping destination in Greenwich.

"Having worked with the community, we really believe we can make a positive difference and provide local shoppers with more choice and variety."

Sainsbury's have also redecorated the local scout hut and have helped St Joseph's Primary School to turn wood from the cherry trees previously on the site into playground furniture.

The sight of the old store has been taken over by IKEA and all materials from the building will be recycled by Sainsbury's.
