Millwall’s new left-back Joe Martin has admitted he could have joined the club in 2013.

The 26-year-old put pen to paper on a 12-month contract this week after being released by Gillingham.

Martin was part of the Gills’ League Two title winning side and that success under Martin Allen put him firmly on the Lions’ radar, although he decided to stay put.

“There was initially interest in me from Millwall two years ago and I was tempted then,” the defender revealed to millwallfc.co.uk

“But Gillingham had just been promoted and I ended up staying there.

“This time, however, when I heard that the opportunity might be there for me again I was really excited and there was no way I was going miss it this time.

“For me Millwall is a big club with passionate fans and with Neil Harris in charge there is clearly a buzz about the place.

“I already know John Marquis and Andy Frampton, the new development coach, and I’m looking forward to the trip to Portugal which will be a good opportunity to get to know people and for us to bond as a group.”
