A former British champion boxer from Bellingham planned to sell his old shorts and gloves to join ISIS in Syria, a court heard.

Anthony Yardley Small, 33, of Southend Lane, is accused of trying to join ISIS after spreading terrorist material online.

He was arrested after two other men, Michael Coe and Simon Keeler, were found with false documents in the back of a lorry in Dover on November 30 last year as they allegedly tried to join ISIS.

Small was arrested at his sister's address on December 4 after receiving hospital treatment for breaking his hand.

Opening their trial at the Old Bailey today (June 15), prosecutor Richard Whittam said: "The prosecution's case is they intended to travel to Syria to join and support what is called Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, known as ISIL or ISIS."

Small is also accused of publishing articles supporting the attack on James Foley and Attacks By Muslims In Perspective.

Both Small and Coe had previously been photographed at a demonstration on the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the court heard.

He is charged with disseminating terrorist publications, two charges of supporting a proscribed organisations and a charge of conspiracy to possess false identity documents with improper intention.

Small had not received the false documents but they were in the process of being arranged, the court heard.

The court also heard Small had listed a number of pairs of his old boxing gloves on eBay, with an 'exclusive' pair of Adidas boxing boots in September last year.

Among the items found by police at his home address was a hand-held sword and an image of the British Isles covered by an ISIS flag, jurors heard.

Small has denied all charges against him.

Keeler and Coe, both 33 of east London have denied engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist attacks.

The trial continues.
